These days you can study most subjects online, however there are a few areas in which degrees are not available in online mode. One of those is medicine, at least as far as becoming a doctor. Currently there is no way to become a doctor with an online degree, which really isn't too shocking. There are however many careers in the medical field other than being a doctor and many of these fields do offer online degrees. Far and away the most common online medical degree is a nursing degree, but there are many others.

You generally can't become an RN through an online course, again because of the requirement for practical training. There are however a number of online degrees available for nurses who are looking to upgrade their skills. The most common is aimed at RN's who don't have a bachelors degree. A bachelors degree is pretty much a requirement nowadays and nurses who don't have one will find it difficult to advance in their careers so there are plenty of schools offering RN's a chance to complete their bachelors degree. There are also a number of degrees available for nurses who wish to add speciality qualifications.

When choosing a school it is important that you make sure that the school is both properly accredited and acceptable to the state licensing board, something vital if you want to go into medical research careers. Generally speaking you want to look for a school that is regionally accredited. There are other kinds of accreditation, but regional accreditation is considered the best. There are so many schools out there that are regionally accredited that there is no reason to consider a school that isn't.

There are many more career options in the field of medicine besides being a doctor or a nurse, many of them offer online degrees. By and large whether an online degree is available or not will be determined by how much hands on training is involved. Jobs that require practical experience don't really work that well with online training. The best option is to decide what career you would like to pursue and then look to see if there is an online degree available in that field.
